The Lockdown Drill provides preparation for situations when it is unsafe, as deemed by the Principal, Vice Principal, or Principal Designate, to evacuate the building due to dangerous intruders and/or violent acts. The Emergency Lock-Down tone will be sounded. The fire alarm will not be used.
Instructions for teachers:
Walk to your door. Ask any students or volunteers in the hallway to step into your room for a moment. Lock your door if possible. Turn off the lights. (You may wish to turn them back on for the following discussion.)
Discuss the following with your students regarding what to do when they hear the tone:
“The tone you just heard signals a Lock-Down. When you hear the tone, you need to take precautions to ensure your safety. If you are in a classroom, the teacher will close the door, turn off all lights, and ask you to move away from windows. If you are in the hallway, move into a classroom. If you are in the washroom, stay there. Wherever you are get safe and listen for instructions over the PA.”
GET SAFE means:
a) Move into a classroom. The teacher will lock the door behind you.
b) Move away from all windows, including those to the hallways or to the outside.
c) Get down under a table or move behind something.
d) Discuss any other questions.
The main purpose of this drill is for students and staff members to reflect on how they could help themselves and others get safe in such an event.
