The process of assigning students to classes is a complex one that begins with the school division allocating teaching staff based on projections of student numbers for September. It then becomes the task of the school administrators, with the advice and recommendations of the staff, to organize students into that number of enrolling classrooms. In doing this, we must work at balancing student and program needs throughout the school within the limits of school division policy concerning class sizes. As staffing is dependent upon the enrollment in each grade, multi-aged or combined classes may occur. This practice is well supported by research and our beliefs about how children learn. It is also often a practical necessity with our enrollment numbers.
The process of making up classes for each school year begins in June, based on the best information available at that time. Our goal is to come up with a placement for each child which will offer that child the greatest chance of success. The staff has input into this process considering but not limited to the following factors. The following list is not in priority order:
• The child’s intellectual, social, emotional, and behavioural developmental levels & needs
• The preferred learning style(s) of the student
• The child’s physical and social maturity
• The child’s interactions with other students
• The age of the child
• The “social dynamics” factors within the class
• Fair distribution of children with exceptionalities
• The best use of resource teachers & teacher assistants
• The male/female balance in each class
• The balance of leaders in each class
• The number of years the child has been with the teacher
• Student friendships
• Parental requests – please see below
Each year parents are invited to participate in the placement process. Parents will be asked to make their submissions in writing by the 1st of June of the preceding school year. We will consider all information that you provide about the type of academic and social environments in which your child thrives. Click here to make a submission now.
Where is the class list?
It is not school policy to distribute the names of children and their classroom placement. Children and their parents are informed of the class placement via the June Report Card.
What if we want to change placements for our child?
Placements are ultimately the responsibility of school administration. Parents are welcome to participate in the process by providing information in writing before June 1. This information is added to what teachers already have gathered to make up the most productive classes possible. Educators take many considerations into account to ensure productive classes, including learning styles, academic strengths, gender balance, learning support requirements, and friendships. Any information provided by parents is shared with the team working on class lists and a copy is placed in the student’s cumulative file for future reference.
